ABSTRACT

A retired major in the Salvadoran Army and the founder of the ultra right wing political party ARENA, D’Abuisson was a leader of the extreme right in El Salvador. He was accused of participat ing and promoting death squad activity in the country throughout the 1970s and 1980s (see death squads). In 1992, when the United Nations released the Truth Commission Report, D ’Abuisson was singled out as the intellectual perpetrator of Cardinal Oscar Romero’s assassi nation on 24 March 1980, and linked to a series of other crimes and death squad kidnappings and murders perpetrated during the Salvadoran Civil War (1979-92).
