ABSTRACT
Possibly the last and most sophisticated of Argen tina’s eccentric writers, Raschella belongs to a peculiar immigrant lineage. He places questions of language and ideology within the subjective universe of his characters. Working with fragmen tary histories, their totality glimpsed in reiterated brief and imprecise dramatic motifs, Raschella’s literary language embraces elements of Italian peasant language defiantly set within an admirable lyrical rhetoric, as in the novel Dialogos en los patios rojos (Dialogues on Red Patios) (1994). A school teacher for three decades, Raschella wrote criticism and a film script. After 1963 he turned towards poetry, translation and fiction.
