ABSTRACT
President of the Panamerican Conference held in Buenos Aires in 1936, Saavedra played an out standing role in the peace conference which ended the war between Bolivia and Paraguay (1932-5) over the oil and timber-rich region of the Gran Chaco. In 1936 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (see Nobel Prizes). He taught at several universities in Argentina and occupied a number of important posts, among them Minister of Justice and of Education and Foreign Secretary between 1932 and 1938.
