ABSTRACT

Walcott’s poetic achievement has been great. His early mature volumes In a Green Night (1962), The Castaway (1965) and The Gulf(1969) established a supple lyricism as much at home in European as in Caribbean rhythms. His poetic autobiography, A n o th e r L ife (1973), in length and fluency presages the marvellous O m eros (1990). Other important works include Sea Grapes (1976), The StarApple Kingdom (1980), The Fortunate Traveller (1982), Midsummer (1984) and The Arkansas Testament (1987), in which Walcott demonstrated his remarkable ability to be both local and personal, international and everyman.
