ABSTRACT

Architect His designs for theatres, auditoria and public meeting halls are particularly significant; his wide experience in the field produced in the 1990s a series of provincial theatres characterized by their generous internal space, pleasant use of colour, functional efficiency and use of interconnecting volumes - curved and straight lines on the external facades - which gave them a sculptural appear ance. A naturalized Mexican, Zabludovsky opened his own practice in 1949, building a series of fine, well-designed and finished private homes, apart ment blocks and offices in the international style. His Auditorio Cinco de Mayo, in Puebla, built in collaboration with Guillermo Rossell, dates from this time. In 1968 he embarked on a series of collaborative projects with Teodoro G onzalez de L eon, though each continued their independent work throughout. These joint projects were remarkable for their quality, functionality and their formal solutions; massive forms and the use of patios were constant features. In buildings like the Delegacion Cuauhtemoc (Municipal Town Hall) (1972-3), the headquarters of the Workers Housing Institute INFONAVIT (1975) and the Colegio de Mexico (1974-5), the tendency to the horizontal is repeated, as is the use of external work based on massive volumes and the visible presence of concrete combined with other materials. Their style has had a considerable influence on other architects.
