ABSTRACT

Partnerships between police agencies and academics have existed in one form or another for the past century. However, it was not until the last three decades that the two entities have partnered more regularly to form both short- and long-term working relationships. Most recently, partnerships have begun taking on the form of long-term collaborations, focusing on ongoing research and knowledge transfer rather than individual projects. Despite the increasing prevalence of this type of partnership, relationships between police and academics still vary widely in their length and composition. Regardless of their make-up, these relationships have undoubtedly benefited both the police and the academics involved in them. However, as we describe, there remains significant room for improvement if police—academic partnerships are to reach their full potential.
