In a book with a focus on working with families, it is essential to start with an examination of assumptions and questions around our ideas about families, and to explore some of the relevant theories. Life cycle developmental theory is particularly appropriate as a foundation for family nursing practice. There is also in this chapter a consideration of the family as a public and a private institution and finally a review of the changing composition of families in Britain today.
