ABSTRACT
Wesley Mitchell believed that social science research could provide the knowledge that would allow mankind to control social forces. Just as the application of natural science knowledge to the technologies of production had led to unprecedented growth in material prosperity, the wise application of social science knowledge to the making of policy could lead to an era of rapid social progress.
