ABSTRACT

Within the last two decades, mass customisation has emerged as a dominant business strategy. The goal of mass customisation is to efficiently provide customers what they want, when they want it. This chapter provides a general introduction to the mass customisation concept, its background, and its underlying fundamental capabilities: solution space definition, the design of robust processes, and choice navigation. The focus of this chapter will be less on the domain of architecture and the built environment, but rather on the traditional fields of applications. The chapter hence will serve as a framework for the analysis of mass customisation systems and the elements of such a system to make it work.
