ABSTRACT

The region considered in this chapter (Figure 10.1) has been defined as the area of Scotland lying to the north-west of the Highland Line, the geological boundary which marks the northern limit of the Central Valley of Scotland. The Highland Line can be traced from the Mull of Kintyre in the southwest, through the southern end of Loch Lomond, north-west of Stirling and Perth to reach the sea at Stonehaven. Although the area of mainland Scotland which lies to the north-west of the Highland Line is generally referred to as ‘the Highlands of Scotland’, it includes terrain which is far from mountainous, such as around the Moray Firth and in north-east Aberdeenshire.
