ABSTRACT
The German Democratic Republic was an entity that was foisted on the inhabitants of the territory it covered. Its existence was based on the wish and the ability of a foreign power, namely the Soviet Union, to sustain it. As soon as that power was willing to relinquish control it was no longer able to survive.
