ABSTRACT

In the schools of England and Wales there are many really hard-working and exciting secondary school geography teachers, producing high-quality teaching materials and stimulating their pupils. They use innovative teaching methods, going well beyond normal expectations. Nevertheless, I would argue that there is a particularly serious problem in some geography teaching. Essentially, there is too much concern with teaching and not enough with learning, too much emphasis on substantive aspects of geography and not enough on the intellectual development of pupils.
