ABSTRACT

When I agreed to contribute a chapter to this book I was persuaded by Nod Miller to use it as an opportunity to explore an aspect of my work which I found problematic. I have always found it difficult to describe my work; it is continually shifting between job titles such as consultant, trainer, adult educator and facilitator. This was particularly true of one project I was engaged in during the late 1980s on a housing estate I shall call Fernhouse. It was a difficult project, about which I had many unresolved feelings, not least of which was the nature of my own role.
