ABSTRACT

The common injunction in learning from experience is, echoing David Hunt’s (1987) well-known phrase, to ‘begin with ourselves’. Our original conception of the book was to do this in the introductory chapter and to use our own experience as a way of framing what was to follow. As we edited and reworked the introduction, it seemed less and less appropriate to include a substantial element of autobiographical material there. However, we were convinced that it would not be true to our values to deny our locatedness. The solution was to end with ourselves.
