TouchingthevoyagehemadebytheseaMajor,Philochorus, andsomeotherholdeopinion,thathewentthitherwithHercules againsttheAmazones:andthattohonourhisvaliantnes,Hercules gavehimAntiopatheAmazone.Butthemoreparteoftheother Historiographers,namelyHellanicus,Pherecides,andHerodotus, doewrite,thatTheseuswentthitheralone,afterHerculesvoyage, andthathetookethisAmazoneprisoner,whichislikeliesttobe true.1Forwedoenotfindethatanyotherwhowentthisjorney withhim,hadtakenanyAmazoneprisonerbesideshimselfe. BionalsotheHistoriographer,thisnotwithstandingsayeth,that hebroughtherawaybydeceitandstealth.FortheAmazones (sayethhe)naturallylovingmen,dydnotftieatallwhentheysawe themIandeintheircountrye,butsentethempresents,andthat Theseusentisedhertocomeintohisshippe,whobroughthima present:andsosoneasshewasaborde,hehoysedhissayle,andso cariedheraway....Nowhearewhatwastheoccasionofthewarres oftheAmazones,whichmethinckeswasnotamatterofsmall moment,noranenterpriseofawoman.2Fortheyhadnotplaced theircampewithintheverycittieofAthens,norhadnotfought intheveryplaceitselfe(calledPnyce)adjoyningtothetempleof theMuses,iftheyhadnotfirstconqueredorsubduedallthecountryethereabouts:neitherhadtheyallcomenatthefirst,s~valiantlytoassailethecittieofAthens.Now,whethertheycameby Iandefromsofarreacountrye,orthattheypassedoveranarmc ofthesea,whichiscalledBosphorusCimmericus,beingfrosenas Hellanicussayeth:itishardelytobecredited.Butthatthey campedwithintheprecinctoftheverycittieitselfe,thenamesof theplaceswhichcontineweyettothispresentdayedoewitnesseit, andthegravesalsoofthewomenwhichdyedthere.Butsoitis, thatbotharmieslayeagreattimeoneinthefaceoftheother,ere theycametobattell.HowbeitatthelengthTheseushavingfirst madesacrificeuntoFearethegoddesse,accordingtothecounsaill ofaprophecichehadreceyved,hegavethembattell3inthemoneth ofAugust,onthesamedaye,inthewhichtheAtheniansrloeevm
