ABSTRACT

The first cause of civill breach was CtEsars last will, and testament, in which Antonius being named but in the second place, he grew starke mad, that Octavius was preferred, and for that cause opposed the adoption of that most spiritfull young-man with an inexpiable warre. For seeing him not fully eighteene yeeres old, tender, & fit to be wrought upon, and open to abuse, both defaced the dignitie of CtEsar's name with reviling termes, and diminisht his inheritance with privie thefts, disgraced him with foule phrases, and gave not over, by all the wayes hee could invent, to impeach his adoption into the Julian family: lastly, enterprised a warre for over-bearing the yong noble gentieman, and with an armie, raised in Gall on this side the Alpes, besieged Decimus Brutus for resisting his practices. Octavius CtEsar, pitied for his youth, and wrongs, & gracious for the majestie of that name which hee assumed, calling his adoptive fathers old souldiers to arms, hee then a private person (who would give credit to it?) sets upon the Consull, delivers Brutus from siege, and strips Antonius out of his campe: at that time hee did nobly with his owne hand: for bloudy, & wounded as hee was, hee carried upon his owne shoulders the eagled ensigne into the campe, which the eagle-bearer deliverd to him, dying slaine.
