ABSTRACT

Glasgow, with a population of 662000 in 1991, is the largest city in Scotland. As one of the first cities to witness deindustrialization and with a distinct lack of success in attracting producer services, Glasgow had little other option open to it than to look elsewhere for a sector which could help it climb out of the mire. In these circumstances, Glasgow has attempted to establish itself as a ‘city of culture’. The aim of this chapter, therefore, is to use this city to evaluate the role that cultural industries can play in local economic development.
