ABSTRACT
Since the early 1960s female participation in the labour force has increased significantly in France, making it one of the countries in the European Union with the highest activity rates for mothers, as well as one of the highest birth rates. These trends may be explained, at least in part, by measures introduced by successive French governments to compensate for the cost of raising a family and to help couples combine family life with employment.
