Occupational stress is a significant research area in the United Kingdom. There is a large body of research studies which have sought to identify the stressors associated with a variety of occupations and employee groups and their impact on health and health behaviours (see for example, Cooper and Sutherland, 1991; Rees and Cooper, 1992). As the majority of these studies have been cross-sectional rather than longitudinal in design, there is relatively less research evidence on the effectiveness of any interventions which may have subsequently been introduced in response to the findings.
