ABSTRACT
This chapter is divided into three sections. First, the main characteristics of alphabetic orthographies as well as some relevant distinguishing features of the orthographies are examined. Next, a summary of studies of English spelling development, which has provided the backdrop for much of the cross-linguistic work, is presented. Finally, the cross-linguistic evidence pertaining to the potential effects of orthographic depth on various aspects of spelling development is discussed.
