ABSTRACT
The Ulster Wildlife Trust, a leading nature conservation group in Northern Ireland and one of the environmental organizations to be discussed in this chapter, introduced a new slogan in 1989 to describe its work: ‘Standing up for nature’. The essence of the analysis I wish to put forward can usefully be understood through an adaptation of this slogan; I am interested in the way in which environmentalists stand in for nature.
