ABSTRACT

Throughout the life story [of Nathan Kakianak] there is the theme of a future orientation…: not only the training for the future occupational role of hunter, or a provider in other respects, but also more generally the training for the responsibilities of family head. Nathan, caught up in the enthusiasm of future possibilities, thinks longingly of the day when the family can return to their camp, and works with gusto on building the family’s boat and saving money to purchase a motor and the necessary equipment. And it is the vision of the future goal which holds many other such diverse activities together in a meaningful motivational framework.
