ABSTRACT
In the last century and a quarter the population of the United States has grown by over one hundred million. We are too likely to think of this phenomenal increase as something unique and unparalleled. It is, in fact, merely an unusually striking example of the way in which the development of commerce and communication, the opening up of new resources and the resulting industrial cooperation of the whole world have brought about an enormous increase in the number of human beings.
