ABSTRACT

Did you enjoy music at school? Do you enjoy music nowadays, long after school memories have faded? You may have been one of the fortunate few to have received a rich and varied diet of music; or you may remember, with some embarrassment, being told that you couldn’t sing, or were not able to keep time. You may have remained untouched by the ‘school music experience’, your time being spent responding to a narrow range of music, often concerned with peripheral aspects, with underlying perceptions of high and low brow, and of the potency of cheap music. All kinds of musics are found in the new National Curriculum. Every child is entitled to receive minimum musical experiences. These are outlined below.
