Introduction

A central idea in assembling this volume was to put the spotlight on children and young people and their relationship to contemporary family life. The book has grown out of an international conference which we organized to celebrate the International Year of the Family in London, 1994 under the umbrella of the International Sociological Association’s Committee for Family Research (see also Brannen and O’Brien, 1995).
