ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we will first look at how you might familiarize yourself with the local environment around your school, as the National Curriculum for Geography takes the local area as one of the starting points for developing and teaching geographical understanding. We will introduce ways of planning lessons which build on the locality, and other National Curriculum requirements. We will also include the integral rôle of information technology and assessment. Further important features of planning lessons will be included; for example, how to utilize fieldwork in both Key Stages 1 and 2. The concepts, issues and progression of skills and overall ideas will be discussed using practical examples. This will involve looking at the integration of skills, places and thematic studies. We shall conclude by considering other practical ideas and guidance.
