ABSTRACT
Authorities in Japan seem agreed that this goddess must be extremely ancient: a survivor from a very early age which may well be pre-agricultural. Her similarities with the goddess of hunters and animals in the Caucasus may, indeed, testify to a prehistoric Caucasian admixture in the Japanese ethnic inheritance (see extensive bibliography in La Barre 1972; Hultkrantz 1961).
