ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the role of satellite television in engendering identity amongst Hong Kong Chinese1 migrants in the UK. After a brief account of how this group first settled in Britain, I shall survey how they have been (mis)represented in the British media, and how their entertainment and information needs were met prior to the advent of satellite television. Then television viewing in general, and a specific ‘television event’ in particular, will be analysed in relation to how the processes and politics of identity formation have changed between and across generations. Original data were gleaned from participant observation at three sheltered housing schemes for more than 100 Chinese elderly in Nordentown2 and a Chinese supplementary school in London between June 1997 and August 1998.
