Virtual research in performative times book
In this chapter we will look at the impact of new information/ communication technologies (ICTs) on new forms of knowledge and changes in research or modes of knowledge production. A significant aspect of the contemporary moment is the proliferation of different forms of knowledge and of new modes and sites of knowledge production. The production of knowledge is now something that is not only done by academic researchers but engages many more-in different ways and forms-as learners and ‘knowledge workers’. The proliferation of knowledge, knowledge production and knowledge producers has resulted in greater uncertainty as to the status of ‘knowledge’—in effect, a deconstruction and ‘decentring’ of knowledge in its traditional forms, production and legitimation.
