ABSTRACT

Braunstone, an estate in west Leicester, was designated in 1999 as a New Deal for Communities Pathfinder project by the government, on the grounds that it was the most deprived ward in the East Midlands. £49.5m was allocated to regenerate the estate over seven years, and Braunstone Community Association (BCA) was set up to deliver the programme. Braunstone was then designated as a Sport Action Zone (SAZ) in 2001 by Sport England – the smallest in England, by area and population.
