ABSTRACT
Niccolò Machiavelli died in relative poverty, a worn-out man who had wanted to serve his country for the previous twenty years, but had been excluded from public office because he had been associated with the previous Republican regime. He would have found it ironic that his name today is still remembered perhaps more for political duplicity than for his belief in a dynamically led republican civic society.
