ABSTRACT

The transformation of the international system is a hot topic these days. From the popular press to academic theses, the chimes of globalisation, global change and international transformation can be heard. This chapter considers whether and in what ways European Economic and Monetary Union and the establishment of the euro have contributed to a transformation of international relations. Some academic proponents of transformation, such as David Held and Andrew Linklater, suggest that developments in the European Union constitute a laboratory for what we can expect in the face of significant global change.
