ABSTRACT
In Japan and the US, as in most countries, the family is the main provider of care for the elderly (Maeda and Nakatani, 1992). However, the concept of family care may be interpreted differently in each country. What is meant by family? Which family members provide care? What are the expectations of family members with respect to caregiving? Answers to these questions vary according to cultural background and personal history.
