ABSTRACT

This chapter will review research studies of work on the moving image in English, where such work involves ICT. In keeping with the rest of this book, and the systematic review on which it is based (Burn and Leach 2003), this review deals with a kind of literacy. Where such a conception is unexceptional in the context of language, it is less obvious, even contentious, as a way of thinking about film, video, television or animation as forms of communication. We will begin, then, by considering the idea of a literacy of the moving image, which has a tangled and complex history.
