ABSTRACT
Lawrence A. Cremin was a historian, teacher and leader whose work had a profound effect on educational history in particular and educational research in general. He was born in New York City in the United States in 1925. Cremin is best known for his long-standing efforts to improve the quality of scholarship and teaching in history of education and to broaden the parameters of inquiry for educational historians. Moreover, he devoted much of his career to establishing history of education as a disciplined-based field inextricably linked to the main currents of historical scholarship. Cremin's importance to the transformation of the role of history in the field of education can be understood primarily through an appreciation of the leading role he played on two important fronts. The field of educational history flamed into vigorous life in America during the second half of the 1960s.
