ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the meaning of ‘violent girls’, drawing heavily on the perspectives and views of teenage girls themselves. Based on findings from a Scottish-based study of girls and their views and experiences of violence, this chapter suggests that it is essential to be cautious regarding the use of the category ‘violent girls’. Indeed, it will be argued that this term is problematic and it is important to be mindful of the common aspirations and experiences that link teenage girls' lives. The implication of this is that in order to understand the perspectives of ‘violent girls’, it is necessary to situate their views in the context of broader concerns that govern teenage girls' everyday lives.
