ABSTRACT

In recent years there have been countless articles written about graduate employee unionization. The Graduate Student Organizing CommitteeUnited Autoworkers of America (GSOC-UAW) and its campaign to organize teaching and research assistants at New York University was the subject of many of them. Being the first private university in the country to successfully organize a union got our campaign a lot of attention. Normally it is difficult to get press to cover stories of workers trying to form unions, but there has been some caché to graduate employee organizing campaigns, producing many articles that spin the story in pretty much the same, overly cute way: Graduate students and autoworkers? Philosophers as shop stewards?
