ABSTRACT
Over the past two decades or so, the idea that contracts have a role in learning has become popular. There are a number of reasons for this. Explaining the relationship of contracts to learning is therefore not straightforward. This chapter explains the background to the interest in contracts. This is partly a matter of the social context of learning, but as with other recent developments in learning theory, it also relates to general developments in the social and political organization of modern states.
