ABSTRACT

MIT is currently engaged in two projects aimed at assembling, delivering and accessing reusable Internet-based educational materials. The Open Knowledge Initiative (OKI) is an open-source layered services software architecture and the Open CourseWare project (OCW) is an initiative to make MIT course materials freely available on the Web for non-commercial use. Based on the authors’ experiences, this chapter will look at the ways in which pedagogical requirements and desired models of teaching can and should shape the underlying technical decisions for the dissemination of educational software. It is hoped that the processes described herein will serve as a useful guideline for others seeking to develop reusable learning materials.
