ABSTRACT

Environmental problems are among the most urgent challenges of our times. In addition to technical solutions, psychological predictors of ecological behaviour3 need to be found so that such behaviour can be better promoted (cf. Kruse, 1995; Stern, 1992). Some recent theoretical considerations attest to the significance of responsibility as a promising predictor of ecological behaviour (e.g. Eden, 1993). However, responsibility is neither a unitary concept nor is it embedded in a single common theoretical frame (Auhagen, this volume; Birnbacher, this volume; Shaver and Schutte, this volume). The present study’s intent is to conduct a review of the empirical literature that explores the link between responsibility and ecological behaviour. Our purpose is to estimate the strength and the extent of a causal relation between responsibility and ecological behaviour.
