ABSTRACT

Abstract: In this chapter two issues are discussed in detail: the norm of social responsibility and responsibility as a motive of volunteers in welfare organisations. With respect to the norm of social responsibility two dimensions are distinguished: fulfilment of the justified expectations of others and adherence to the rules of the game. An overview of research on the relation between individual differences in social responsibility and prosocial behaviour indicates that people who follow the norm more strictly show more pro-social behaviour. This result is confirmed by research on personal norms which are understood as internalised social norms. The case of volunteerism is analysed with special reference to the role of responsibility. Two facets of responsibility are distinguished as motives of volunteers, namely: social and political responsibility. In addition, evidence is discussed which points to similarities and differences in the motives of volunteers in three European countries.
