ABSTRACT
Situated on the eastern seaboard of the Australian continent, Brisbane was officially declared a city in 1902 following the opening of the area to free settlement in 1842. The City of Brisbane Act (1924) created a city government to carry out the functions previously performed by twenty local authorities. The new city administration responsible for the whole of Brisbane was established in 1925.
