ABSTRACT

Environmentalism is changing, but how it is changing is a matter of debate. The tale most often told about the recent evolution of the environmental movement in Europe is that it has become so institutionalised that it no longer captures the imagination or commands the support of any large part of the public. In this version of events, institutionalisation is accompanied by demobilisation, protest is in decline and the prognosis for the movement is uncertain (van der Heijden 1997; Diani and Donati 1999).
