ABSTRACT
This chapter will examine the concept of war and peace and the structures existing within the Byzantine Empire for waging war and the pursuit of peace. The material is mainly based on the records of the middle Byzantine period (ninth to eleventh centuries), though reference will occasionally be made to earlier sources.
