ABSTRACT

Blowing sand and dust produce hazardous driving conditions along major thoroughfares in portions of the Southwest of the USA. Several fatal accidents have resulted on local, state, and interstate highways in the region. This chapter details some of the problems of blowing dust on Arizona's highway network. Arizona dust studies started at an applied level (Marcus 1976) and, subsequently, fundamental research on dust emission and factors of dust generation took place (Brazel and Nickling 1987).
