ABSTRACT
Since its inception in 1884 Cumann Luthchleas Gael or the Gaelic Athletic Association (G.A.A.) has been responsible for the promotion and strengthening of the national identity, in a 32-county Ireland, through the preservation and promotion of Gaelic games and pastimes. National games such as hurling, Gaelic football, handball and rounders are organised and controlled by the G.A.A. The tvo major sports in Ireland are hurling and Gaelic football and this study is concerned vith Gaelic football.
