ABSTRACT

Lesions of the lateral ligaments of the ankle joint are one of the commonest diagnostic findings in accident surgery and are the most common injuries in sports. From the literature it is known that about 25 per cent of the patients who are treated at the emergency department of a central hospital for a sports-related injury have an acute sprain of the ankle. For The Netherlands this means that only 300,000 patients each year suffer a sprained ankle in sports. In soccer 30 per cent of all injuries of the lower extremities are in the ankle, and of these, 75 per cent involves the lateral ligaments. No wonder that there is a great amount of literature on this subject.
