ABSTRACT

This paper presents a line of research examining the influence of attentional patterns on golf performance. The studies attempt to bring important attentional questions from the golf course into a controlled laboratory setting, and then to return to the course with answers that enhance performance. Beginning to elite skill level players were examined using behavioral, cognitive, and psychophysiological indicators of attention. It appears that consistent behavioral and cognitive patterns facilitate a consistent psychophysiological state conducive to best golf putting performance. These patterns can be trained using psychological skills training programs and EEG biofeedback. Fitness and age have also been found to influence attentional patterns suggesting that aerobic fitness may be important to maintain attention in golf and that psychophysiological patterns may need to change as one ages.
