ABSTRACT
Nearly every day, if you read the newspaper, listen to the radio or watch television in America, you will encounter something about an African American athlete. Today, African American athletes generate enormous amounts of attention from the mass media. Indeed, many journalists seem to exist only to cover African American athletes, especially those who write about professional football, boxing or basketball.
