ABSTRACT

This was an assault on Olympic peace, on the ancient truce held during the period of the games. Olympic athletes had become victims of a terrorist act (Höfer 1994:200).

In the history of sport and terrorism, however, one finds many examples of athletes being less the victims of political terror, rather political terrorists themselves. The dark side of the political outlook of some sports organizations and athletes is that in many cases this outlook accompanies an extremely nationalistic view of one’s own country. Sport, physical culture and fitness bodies have all been used in the twentieth century as weapons against the ‘enemy’ both inside and outside their country.
